The Student Song Festival  

 

 

A little bit of history

 


The name of the first edition of the festiwal was "National Student Song Contest". Through out the years the festival has become a great cultural event. It's meaning was growing with every edition. Many of the laureates are not forgotten and most of them are known to every Pole, for example: Urszula Sipińska, Zbigniew Zamachowski, Maciej Zembaty, Maryla Rodowicz, Stanisław Sojka, Ewa Demarczyk, Renata Przemyk, Raz Dwa Trzy, Marek Grechuta, Jacek Kaczmarski, Grzegorz Turnau.

In PRL era, the festival was a symbol of freedom, happines and had a unique artistic spirit. Nowadays, even though the reality is different the festival is still a huge and important event. Winning the festival often opens the dors to big career.

 

 

THE CRONICLES OF THE STUDENT SONG FESTIVAL 

 

1962 The first competition took place on 23th - 25 th of November 1992. The name of the contest was "The first national Student Song Contest" Edward Linde Lubaszenko won the festival and the second runner - up was Ewa Demarczyk.

1963 A year later the festival was a part of 600th Anniversary of Jagiellonian University. Zygmunt Konieczny had his debut as a jury member. Bogdana Zagórska had won the contest and one of the other awards was given to Leszek Długosz.


1964 Third festival is still a mystery because all of the documentary was burned down.

Zdzisława Sośnicka got the main prize and  it was a beginning of her huge career. Teresa received a second award prize.

1965 The festival participants sang with "Jazz Band Ball". The band received a special award. Danuta Jamrozy won the festival, the second runner-up was Mirosław Kowalak from Poznań and third award went to Urszula Sipińska. Other important artist who took part in the festival were:

Janusz Nowicki, Andrzej Rosiewicz, Maciej Zembaty. Agnieszka Osiecka was a jury member.

 

1966 The fifth festival was Cracows festival- all of the winners were from Cracow.

Urszula Popiel and  Hanna Podkanowicz won the contest. Andrzej Rosiewicz didn't show up in  Krakow, which was a big surprise for public and organizers.

1967 For the first time festival concerts were shown on television. The hosts were Edyta Wojtczak and Janusz Budzyński. The jury members

(Kazimierz Rudzki, Mieczysław Czuma and Wojciech Młynarski) gave the main award to

Maryla Rodowicz - student from Warsaw. Second award received Marek Grechuta  from Cracow, He performed "Tango Anawa". The sixth competition was one of the best in festival's history.

 

 

1968 The festival did not take place.

1969 After a year absence caused by stormy events of 1968, the festival returned to Cracow. The participants came to Cracow in January and for the first the time the event was named a festival not a contest. A very strange thing happened to the laureates of the festival, they were soon to be forgotten and those artist who lost, later became a great stars (Anna Jantar, Zenon Laskowik, Tadeusz Drozda) 

1970 The eights edition of the festival in December of 1970 took place in a turbulent atmosphere because of the news coming from Gdańsk. It was quite obvious that the situation from 1968 may repeat itself. Natasza Czarmińska was the winner. The second runner- up was Krystyna Tkacz, student from Kraków. Andrzej Sikorowski received an award for his song "New Year".

1971 The festival did not take place.

1972
Another festival took place in January. It was a big success. The formula of the festival was improved- the first festival selections were held during local festivals and contests. It had a strong impact on the future of the festival- it became national. That is why the contest has become the most important event for singing students. The main prize was not given. Second runner- ups were Tadeusz Karmazyn and Paweł Birula.


1973 The next jubilee festival may be called as "big debuts" contest. It was a debut of some jury members (Aleksander Bardini, Jonasz Kofta, Jan Pietrzak, Jan Poprawa). For the first time a Grand Prix award was given. "Brylantowe słowiki" a Krzysztof Piasecki and Krzysztof Szczucki duet received the award. The best song was "Miłość" (lyrics K.K. Baczyński, music J.Lipiński). It was performed by "Boom" from Warsaw.

1974 The artists awarded at the 9th Festival ( Cabaret "Pod Budą" from Kraków, Krzysztof Piasecki from Wrocław, Elżbieta Wojnowska, Henryk Alber from Warsaw) are still big stars. The give concerts, record CD`s, they are very successful. "Wolna Grupa Bukowina" got a special award. Back then nobody had thought, that the lead singer of "Wolna Grupa Bukowina" Wojtek Bellon would become a symbol of a singing poet, and a Wojciech Bellon`s award would be given to the best festival song writers.


1975 The main prizes were given to Bohdan Smoleń from Kraków, Jan Wołek from Warsaw and Henryk Cyganik and Jan Hnatowicz duet from Kraków.


1976 "Baba" and "Nasza Basia kochana" were a huge hit of the festival. One of the laureates was Jan Wołek.

1977 Winner of the festival- Bobo from Wrocław, Piotr Gierak and Jacek Kaczmarski duet from Warsaw, Maria Wiernikowska and Jorgos Mocios from Kraków


1978 Main festival awards went to Grzegorz Bukała, Wały Jagiellońskie from Gdańsk, Waldemar Chyliński from Olsztyn and Jacek Kaczmarski from Warsaw. 

1979 Grupa "Baba" was not able to take part in the festival, so the group members brought a new band to life called "B- complex"- it won one of the awards. Other awards went to  Zbigniew Książek and Grzegorz Tomczak

1980 The festival took place in the middle of the April. The main award was not given. The equal awards went to "Ex" from Olsztyn and Andrzej Płaczek from Katowice. Also a special award was given to Stefan Brzozowski from Olsztyn.

1981 For the second time in its history the jury decided to give a Grand Prix award. The laureate of Grand Prix was Andrzej Janeczko and "Trzeci Oddech Kaczuchy" from Olsztyn. Two second awards went to Jolanta Góralczyk and Roman Kołakowski. Another two went to Grażyna Auguścik and Bogdan Ziółkowski.


1982 The festival did not take place.

1983
In participants memory it was one the best festival in its history. The first award went to Antonina Krzysztoń from Warsaw, the second prize went to "Krakersy" from Wrocław and "Zespół Reprezentacyjny" from Warsaw. Third award was given to Magda Żuk from Warsaw.


1984 The biggest sensation of the festival was the appearance of 17 year old high- school student Grzegorz Turnau who was named "the new Marek Grechuta". The second award was given to Wiesław Tupaczewski from Warsaw, third award went to Piotr Bukartyk from Warsaw and Paweł Orkisz from Kraków.

1985 The biggest event of the festival was performance of "Harwar", a band singing sacrosongs. The band got the first award. Jan Kondrak was given a second award ex aequo with Andrzej Ciborski from Gorzów Wielkopolski..

1986 It was a very serious festival. The jury had to listen to 47 sad contestants. There was no laughter, fun and jokes during that edition. Konrad Materna from Kielce won the main award, he was definitely the biggest personality of that festival. Other important personality was Ryszard Makowski- in that sad edition, he made everyone laugh.

 

1987 The 23rd Festival started cheerfully with Birthday Cake for the 10th Anniversary of "Pod Buda" Band. Olga Lipinska who was the jury chairman gave the main award to Mariusz Lubomsk from Toruń and to cabaret "Potem" from Zielona Góra. Second place went to Jagiellonian University student Magdalena Gajl, ballad singer Mariusz Zadura from Lublin and to Joanna Rutecka from Warsaw.

 

1988 Elżbieta Adamiak made her debut as a jury member, Wojciech Młynarski was the chairman. "Monogramista J.K." band from Kraków got the first award. Other winners were Krystyna Mozejko-

Andryszczyk, Krzysztof Krzak and Maciej Danek from Kraków.

 

1989 Renata Przemyk was the biggest winner of that edition of the festival. She was accompanied by Sławomir Wolski on accordion.

 

1990 The chairman of the jury was surprisingly Jacek Kaczmarski, who came to Poland after a long term absence, and gave a wonderful concert. The biggest personality of that edition was Adam Nowak, author of lyrics and musician, a star of a band "Raz Dwa Trzy" from Zielona Góra. Wojciech Gesicki from Warsaw and "Sie jakos nie klei" got the second award/

 

1991 Magda Umer had given an outstanding concert just before the announcement of the jury verdict. She was given a standing ovation. "Pilnujmy marzenia" featuring Andrzej Sikorowski, Elżbieta Adamiak, Maryla Rodowicz, Magda Umer, Andrzej Zaucha  was another important event of that edition of the festival.  The duo "For Dee" was the winner of the festival, and the second award was given to Bogdan Piecyk from Wrocław, Adam Strug from Warsaw and to band "Zdrowy Stopień Ryzka" from Zielona Góra.

 

1992 A student Robert Kasprzycki and "Paweł i Piotr" were the winners of the 28th Festival. Kasprzycki has also been awarded with Bellon scholarship. Second place went to "Zespół Downa, czyli Grupa Rafała Kmity" from Częstochowa.

 

1993 Magdalena Turowska and "Orkiestra Teatry TRATATATAM" won the Festival. Second place went to Jolanta Myjkowska and "Bo to niebo" band. "Fatamorgana" was the winner of the third place.

 

1994 It was  The 30th annual Festival! Beside the contest, there were many great concert featuring almost all of the previous laureates. Jagoda Naja and Marek Andrzejewski won the first prizes. The second runner- up was Jarosław Wasik. 

 

1995  Barbara Stępniak, "Paru", Agnieszka Hekiert, Marek Dyjak, Grzegorz Halama and "Słodki Całus od Buby" were the winner of that edition of the festival.

 

1996 The laureates of the festival (Dorota Ślęzak, Polucjanci, Jolanta Sip) were invited to Opolskie Debiuty.

 

1997 The festival organized by The Institute of Art was won by Jacek Musiatowicz and cabaret Ek from Zielona Góra. The second runner- ups were "bez Nas Wy" and "Szela".

 

1998 First award- "Teatr Muzyczny KME" from Zabrze, second award Aneta Ryncarz from Kraków, Third award wen Ot to Marcin Różycki and Dominik Kwaśniewski.

 

 1999 The festival was won by "Cudowny czwartek" from Poznań and Marcin Różycki .

 

 2000 The first award was not given. The second award went to Tomasz Hapuowicz and group "Klub Pana Jana", Beata Osytek and Agata Ślazyk.

 

2001 The festival of singing song writers. First award for Ewelina Marciniak, second award for Piotr Rogucki, third for Magdalena Cuglewska, Katarzyna Warno, Małgorzata Wojciechowska and for duo Kwasniewski- Kaczmarczyk.

 

2002 The festival had a very high level. It was won by Beata Loranc from Bielsko- Biała, the second award was given to Joanna Lewandowka from Warsaw

 

2003       "Trzy dni później" won the festival with a interesting version of Kazik Staszewski`s song "Jesień". The second runner- up was Natalia Grosiak from Bielawa, and third place went to Małgorzata Wojciechowska from Kraków.
